2,350gns top price at Border and Lakeland dairy sale
The first Border and Lakeland club show and sale of 2013 saw a smaller than usual entry of 30 young cows and heifers and of varied quality, both in type and pedigree with the demand for the best as keen as ever, with nine making 2,000gns to a top of 2,350gns.
Leading the bids at 2,350gns was Messrs R Veitch of Strandhead, Mauchline who secured the superbly bred Kepculloch Talent August. This one is out of a homebred EX92-3E and sired by Indianhead Red Marker. The 3rd dam was the reserve all American red and white cow Sellcrest No Rachel Red EX94. The vendors Messrs Steel have dispersed the milking portion of their herd and progressively selling the followers as they calve.
Next in the money at 2,300gns was a classy heifer from regular respective consigners Messrs Wilson of Skirwith Hall Farms. Their Stowbeck Toystory Mabel comes from an old home developed family and now joins Messrs J T and E M Marrs herd at Broomhills, Carlisle.
Skirwith Hall Farms also had the highest priced animal in the sale with their 15 month old bull Stowbeck Energy by Pine-Tree Sid out of the Denmire Erma family which traced back to the pure Canadian Wrico Tempo Erma, the bull sold to 2,400gns.
TWINFIELDS DISPERSAL
Following the Border and Lakeland club show and sale was the first sale to disperse the esteemed Twinfields herd of pedigree Holsteins belonging to Messrs Bainbridge of Outfield near Carnforth.
This consignment comprised the most recently calved cows and heifers and their heifer calves.
There was a ringside packed with breeders from near and far keen to compete for the very stylish, superbly bred stock on offer.
Seven young cows and milking heifers made over 3,000gns to a top of 3,800gns, this bid, by an undisclosed breeder from south west Scotland, a September calved VG86 heifer by Pennview Ice Pack, Twinfields Ice Pack Jenny is out of an excellent EX93, 60 tonne Integrity cow from the home developed Jenny family.
At 3,700gns was a very stylish 36kg heifer by Karona Bonair that calved in early November. Twinfields Karona B Trixie VG86 (2YR) had earlier won reserve champion in the club show and sale out of an EX94 homebred cow by Roylane Jordan, the buyer was Mr McNeil of Cairnview, Wigtownshire. She was beaten in the show ring by the overall champion Twinfields Touchdown Joyce VG85 (2YR) that sold to 2,700gns.
One of the most sought after outfits in the Twinfields line up was the Advent Red daughter of the American Elm Park Tiara Red EX90 (EX93 MS). Twinfields Advent Tory Red VG88 is bred off five straight Excellent cows and calved her second calf in mid October last year. At 3,400gns she was purchased by Mr Wood of Manor Farm, North Yorkshire. Her 3 month old heifer calf by Kamps-Hollow Arudolf Red made 2,200gns to Messrs Bradburn of Orrell House Farm, Wigan.
As expected the heifer calves were keenly bid for, at 2,700gns Twinfields Lobster Sara ET out of the 3,50gn Twinfields Million Sara, and an overall average of over £1200 for the very young heifer calves.
