£3,990 top call at multibreed Sedgemoor sale
The spring South West pedigree multibreed sale at Sedgemoor auction attracted a top call of £3,990 for Sloughpool Ginger, a July 2011 Limousin bull from Messrs MM Gollop and Sons, who also followed up with Sloughpool Gerry, another July 2011 bull at £3,780.
The Limousin breed proved to be in the vanguard when it came to the bulls with others selling to Wotton Under Edge in Gloucester at £3,675 for Mr PW Greed and £2,835 for Mr CJ Dare and Son. Mr PW Greed also sold Killerton Gratitude at £3,150 and Mr CJ Dare and Son also sold Hugginshayes Gervinho at £2,677.50. A very smart Blonde bull, Allacott Fergus sold away to Penzance at £2,625 for Messrs SM and D Skinner.
Two very well presented Simmental bulls from Mr J Berry sold at £2,100 twice away to both Yeovil and Highbridge. Blue bulls also sold to £2,100 for Messrs Gould and Son.
On the female front it was the Charolais breed which stole the limelight. A bid of £3,360 was made for Balbithan Celandine, a March 2007 third calver with June 2012 heifer, Balbithan Hazel at foot from Mr and Mrs A White. The Whites also sold Balbithan Czarina, with February 2013 heifer calf Balbithan Irina at foot for £2,310. A May 2012 maiden Charolais heifer from Mortimers Farm, Mortimers Hope, out of the famous Mortimers Urovision sold well at £2,100.
A young Simmental cow with purebred twin heifers at foot and forward from Messrs PT Bale and Son sold at £2,415 Mr PW Greed also scored with a maiden heifer Killerton Gemma at £2,100. Maiden Blue heifers peaked at £1,890 for Mr L Haskell.
SPECIAL MONTHLY CATALOGUED SALE OF SUCKLER COWS, CALVES & STOCK BULLS (82)
A small entry of 82 mixed quality cows and heifers sold to an exceptional trade in front of a packed ring of potential purchasers. All breeds were in demand with units selling to £1,620 and £1,400 for two Limousin x cows with calves at foot for Messrs RC Roynon of Bristol. Simmental x cows with calves to £1,540 Mr RH Webb.
A large entry of British Blue x cows with calves to £1,420 Messrs PC Pocock and Co; £1,320 and £1,300 for S and N Farming and £1,340 for Mr B Richardson, Brayford. Of the native breeds a good run of Aberdeen Angus cows and calves to £1260 Mr T Pointing with Hereford outfits to £1260 and £1220 Mr RH Webb. Red Ruby Devons to £1180 and £1090 Messrs S & P Boyer.
A fine run of homebred in calf heifers from Messrs M & K Churchill & Son, Axminster saw British Blue x to £1340 and £1260 and Simmental x to £1300 (x2) and £1280.
