Herefords sell to 6,200gns at society’s spring show and sale

A steady start to Saturday’s sale picked up pace in the young bullsection, resulting in an 80% clearance of the bulls on offer, with 34 sellingfor £107,992.50 to average £3,176.25.

 

Top call of the day came by the way of the reserve champion, Romany 1Junior D1 J37, bred by JRB Wilson and Sons, Kelso, Borders, selling for 6,200gns. By the Danish bull SMH Castro, he has performance figures for growth inthe top 5%. At 19months and weighing 900kg he was purchased by newcomer to thebreed, Mr J Ray, of Oakingham Stud, Newbury, Berkshire.

Mr Ray also purchased the second highest price bull, Solpoll 1 Jethro, for5,400gns, from Northern Ireland breeders, J and W McMordie, Co. Down. He is bythe renowned prize-winning bull, Solpoll 1 Dynamite.

 

Mrs JM Cant and Partners, Tayside, Scotland, saw their first prize-winningbull, Panmure 1 Jack, sell for 5,100gns to Mrs Pam Noel and Robert Snelling tojoin their Sarabande herd near Reading, Berkshire. Sired by Romany 1 DistillerA84 D53, he tipped the scales at 790kg at 19months.

Messrs JRB Wilson and Sons, saw their second entry, Romany 1 JuggernautA84 J26 sell for 4,600gns to Herefordshire breeders, H Weston and Sons Ltd, Ledbury,to join their Bounds herd.  Juggernaut -at 19 months – weighed in at 905kg, and is one of the last bulls to come out ofthe herd by three times Hereford Sire of the Year, Baybridge 1 Atlas.

Welsh breeders DE and ED and AL Jones saw their Dendor 1 Jugernaut sellfor 4,500gns to DPJones Agricultural Contracting, Maxstoke Herefords,, Birmingham.At 17 months he weighed in at 800kg.

Messrs J and W McMordie, Northern Ireland saw a second bull by theirsire “Dynamite”, Solpoll 1 Jester” sell for 4,000gns. At 19 months he is asuperior carcase sire, whose performance for weight is in the top 10% and EMAand RBY in the top 1%. Weighing in at 815kg he was purchased by Mr AnthonyColburn for Stratfield Saye Farms, Reading, Berkshire.

Mr HA Hatt of Basingstoke, Hampshire, sold a 21 month old bull, Weybrook1 Don 2nd, for 4,000gns.  “Don”weighed in at 925kg and was purchased by WS Turner and Sons, Church Stretton,Shropshire.

 

The Champion of the day, Harveybros 1 Humphrey, bred by Harvey Brothersof Balfron, Glasgow, failed to find a buyer. “Humphrey” at 23 months was by the Northern Ireland bred bull, ParkhillPompeii, who had sired the Champion of the Beef Expo Winter Fair Smithfield2012.

 

In the Female Show Section the Championship went to the 22 month oldDendor 1 Ruby 14th bred by DE, ED and AL Jones, Newtown, Powys. Witha Terminal Sire and Self Replacing Index in the top 10% she sold in-calf to theDanish bull, SMH Euro 30E for 3,800gns to A and S Timbrell, Thames Herefords,Cirencester, Gloucestershire.

The Reserve Championship went to the 24 month old in-calf heifer, Romany1 Julia D1 H63 bred by JRB Wilson and Sons and sold for 3,000 gns to Mr B Head,Barnt Green Herefords, Birmingham.

 

In total seven heifers offered sold for £17,850 to average £2,550. Inthe not shown female section 14 forward sold for a total of £17,335.50 toaverage £1,238.25.
