Angus bulls record 98% clearance at Carlisle
Last Friday’s sale of Aberdeen-Angus at Carlisle saw a 98% clearance for the 52 bulls on offer with a top price of 6500gns and an average of £3367.21 (up £273.21 on last year).
Sale leader, Haymount Puma H875 from Messrs J and W Arnott, Kelso, Roxburghshire, had been tapped out as reserve junior male champion by judge Mrs Wanda Hobbs, Gordon, Berwickshire of the Ellin and Wedderlie herds. By Old Glenort Kallum D784, this August 2008-born bull is out of the Cardona Eagle daughter Haymount Pidana A084 who goes back to Lord Horatio of Blelack. With a terminal sire (TSI) index of +30 and a self replacing index (SRI) of +41, he sold to Robert Forrest, Duns, Berwickshire.The second highest price of 5200gns was shared by two bulls, the first of which was Gear Fieldsman H191, an April 2008-born son of The Moss Mr Eshton D409 from Mark Pilcher, St Ives, Cornwall. Out of the Darlene Cruz 7C daughter Netherton Fleur B199, who is a daughter of Netherton Fleur W6, he has a TSI of +21 and a SRI of +31 and knocked down to the sire’s breeders, North Moss Farm Partnership, Formby, Liverpool.
Second at 5200gns was Border Lynne Jerriot H101 from P D Story, Carlisle, Cumbria. By Hardlawbank Blackmail C206, his dam Border Lynne Julia E049 goes back to Nightingale Regent R27. He was knocked down to G R Coatsworth and Son, Bishop Aukland, County Durham.
Two bulls then shared a 5000gns price tag, the first of which was the third prize Newbank Precision H072 from Moffat, Dumfriesshire-based M and S Wilson. By Moncur Jacob Eric F063, Precision is out of the Mushroom Friar Fergus daughter Cardona Proud Isla. This April 2008-born bull sold to Maxwell Farming, Thornhill, Dumfriesshire.
The next at that money was another from the Arnott family and half brother to their sale leader. Haymount Westwind H828 is again by Old Glenort Kallum D784 and is out of another Cardona Eagle daughter, this time Haymount Westrono Z017. With a TSI of +22 and a SRI of +30, he sold to A and A B Graham, Canobie, Dumfriesshire.
At 4800gns came the best from Neil and Graeme Massie, Dinnet, Aberdeenshire. Blelack Black Viper H092, a Nightingale Defiance E264 son born September 2008, is out of the Blelack Blackstock A227 daughter Blelack Black Velvet E190. With a milk figure of +9, a TSI of +24 and a SRI of +33, he sold to D E W Kibble and Sons, Heriot, Midlothian.
Three bulls then sold at 4500gns, the first being Chapelton Edict H778 from Donald Biggar, Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbrightshire. Born March 2008, he is by Chapelton Dark Middleton E829 and is out of the OGL Battle Cry daughter Chapelton Erica Diamond E694. With a TSI of +26, SRI of +37 and a milk figure of +6, he was knocked down to L L Macive and Co, Duns, Berwickshire.
The next at that money was Housesteads Elite H282 from Messrs R J and L A Acton, Hexham, Northumberland. By Dalrene Cruz 11F and out of Elly of Downfield, who is a daughter of Euphoria of Grimston Fen, he sold to Hoddam and Kinmount Estate, Ecclefechan, Lockerbie.Also at 4500gns was Roscoe Fontaine H630, an August 2008-born bull from Ross Farms Co Ltd, Gorebridge, Midlothian. By Flodden Warden E316 and out of the Blelack Juno Eric Z059 daughter Flodden Fancie C951, he sold to D E W Kibble and Sons, who bought previously.
The day’s champion, Netherton Knightrider H480 from Messrs W and D McLaren, Auchterarder, Perthshire, sold for 4000gns. By Netherton Fabulous Cruz Y300, he is out of the Ranui W Impact daughter Netherton Kim B158 who is out of Kim of Fordafourie. Buyer here was H R Graham and Son, Gorebridge, Midlothian.
Leading female trade with a call of 2500gns was the April 2008-born heifer Paragon Early Starlight H063 from Stuart Mullan of Paragon Pedigree herds, Hexham, Northumberland. Half sister to the sale’s champion, she is by Netherton Fabulous Cruz Y300 and is out of the Wedderlie Netmark A281 daughter Rawburn Evening Star D292. With a milk figure of +9 and a TSI of 26, she sold to G Robinson, Penrith, Cumbria.
Averages; 51 bulls £3327.21; four served and maiden heifers £1876.88, one cow with calf at foot £1785 (Harrison and Hetherington).
