beef cows are facing low cobalt levels

Beef Cattle going out to grass could be at risk of cobalt deficiency, resulting in poor growth and reduced weight gain.

Cobalt, which is essential for the production of vitamin B12 ensuring healthy cows at calving , is the second most common deficiency in UK herds after copper, reckons Les Stappard of Cox Agri.

“Cattle grazing pasture in cobalt deficient areas, such as southern and north-west England, Scotlan and Wales, will benefit from the supplementation.

“But while licks and pasture supplements are better than nothing, the best way of ensuring receives the recommended amount is by using a cobalt pellet or bolus. This gives a measured amount of cobalt to each and every animal,” adds Mr Stappard.
