Best Galloway bulls reach 7000gns

Too many bulls and too few buyers produced a patchy trade at the Galloway Cattle Society’s show and sale at Castle Douglas, although the best bulls sold well to a top of 7000gns.

The day’s highlight came for the black bull Penninghame Major from A K McConchie & Co, Newton Stewart.

By Kirkmabreck Jacobite, this black bull stood champion under judge Denis Gall from Stirling and sold in a three-way split to R McClymont, J F Irving & Sons, and R Mackintosh.

Cumbria breeders F & A Waugh gave 3800gns for the black 14-month-old bull Mylo of Little Mackum.

This son of Lochdochart Gary is Canadian-bred on both sides of his pedigree through Diamond B breeding.

He was consigned from the noted Romesbeoch herd of D Ross at Dumfries.

A good demand for females saw the strongest bidding for the in-calf heifer Blackcraig Foxglove.

She was another showing the influence of Canadian breeding through her sire Diamond B Knock Out.

From the Castle Douglas-based herd of Messrs Finlay, she had been running with a Kirkmabreck sire and realised 3000gns to M McCormick, Newton Stewart.

And the same vendors sold Blackcraig Bertha at 2800gns.

Also by Knock Out, this served heifer is out of a cow by the influential sire Glenkiln Dynamite and was taken by I Thomson, Peebles.
