calved cows more popular than heifers

THE BEST calved cows on offer at the Easter Monday sale of dairy stock at Ross-on-Wye Market, Herefordshire, met a stronger demand than calved heifers. Leading the sale at 890gns was a strong second-calver from PR Pugh and Son of Leominster. Calved heifers reached 820gns with others selling to just under the 800gns mark. Auctioneer Gwilym Richards said 2500gns dairy cattle were not as plentiful this spring as some had predicted. “People thought that at the end of the quota year, farmers would begin selling. But many farmers are waiting to see what their single farm payments are worth before making a decision.”
