Perth bulls’ Mayday success

Bull buyers produced a good trade for Continental and native sires at Perth this week, paying a top price of 3800gns.

Averages for five breeds made good reading with Charolais bulls at £2390, Limousins at £2268 and Simmentals at £2310.

Broadmeadows Cannon continues to wield his influence on today’s Limousin bulls and it was Chapelpark Victor, one of his grandsons, that topped the day at 3800gns for Inverness-shire breeders J&M Pirie.

With French breeding coming through via his Honneur-sired dam, Victor took the reserve breed championship and stays in Scotland with buyer K Taylor of Perthshire.

Other good prices for Limousins included 3600gns for Lethendry Vimto from James McConachie & Son and two bids of 3500gns for Ronald Dick’s Ronick Voyageur and Jim Goldie’s Goldies Virile.

Blairgowrie-based Mornity Farms saw their Mornity Vibart take the championship and top the Charolais at 3400gns.

With a Beef Value of 19, this son of Moyness Pharaoh goes to W & J Grant at Kirriemuir.

Simmentals sold well with two bulls at 3000gns.

The journey from Devon paid off for R Widdicombe who sold Starline Revelation at the joint top price to Gary Christie, Huntly, while L Muir from Orkney also paid 3000gns to secure Mr & Mrs L Moffat’s Gortin Larry-son Innerwick Ross.

Best for the Natives was a 2000gns call from to secure Cawdor breeder David Walker’s Angus bull Galcantray Malt.

He is by Skaill Domino, out of a Domino dam and has a terminal sire index of +18.

Beef Shorthorns sold to 1800gns when R Watson of Dingwall took Aberdeenshire breeder Graham Massie’s Cavans Westness, a red and white son of Glenisla Rannoch.

Averages: 17 Charolais bulls £2390, 19 Simmental bulls £2310, 20 Limousin bulls £2268, two Beef Shorthorn bulls £1837 and six Aberdeen Angus bulls £1890.
