Simmental buyers pick and choose

DESPITE A TOP call of 13,000gns many Simmental bulls were left unsold at Perth last week.

The 108 deals averaged £3297 – around £150 down on the year – but almost 70 bulls went home.

Paying most was Co Antrim bidder Richard Rogers who secured the reserve junior champion Woodhall Premier (beef value 35) from Hector Macaskill of Dunbar. Woodhall Premier is by Mackney Hector and out of a Carnkern Titan dam and had a 400-day weight of 776kg.

The reserve senior title went to Kilmarnock breeder John Young’s Skerrington Pinnacle. A high-ranking EBV bull with a beef value of 44, this son of Dovefields Gallant realised 12,000gns to W McPherson, Inverness.

James Green’s Corskie Principal stood champion under judge Brian Allan, of Newton Stewart. Principal (beef value 43) is the first son of the 12,000gns 2002 Perth champion Popes Laird to be offered for sale. Buyer was Mrs Hitchens, Boddington Estate, Cheltenham.

Another Laird son, Corskie Pascal, made 10,000gns to Strathisla Farms, Perthshire (United Auctions).
