Sixth success for Darsham
EVEN A fractured foot couldn’t stop stockman Jimmy McMillan’s reign at the top at Suffolk Show, as the Clements Partnership of Darsham Farms took the beef interbreed title for the sixth year in a row last week.
Going one place better than he did at last year’s show was their five-year old Charolais bull Moyness Rendevous. A fantastic bull with great size and scale was how interbreed judge Willie McLaren of Auchterarder described his champion choice. “He moved well in the ring and his sheer power stood above everything else.”

Mr McLaren’s reserve choice was Bucks-based Dougie Mash with his five-year old cow Reseda and four month old bull calf. Sired by Malibu, Reseda was imported from France as a yearling heifer.
In a strong commercial line up, Mike and Jean Dickens from Milton Keynes carried on their winning streak with a Belgian Blue cross heifer Asby Lass, weighing in at 540kg. Standing reserve to her was the homebred Limousin cross heifer Hot Pants from Great Yarmouth-based Paul Barwood and Anita Padfield.
In the dairy rings, it was turn for the Canadians to take spot as interbreed judge Charles Reader of Brackley selected a Jersey cow from the Strachan family’s Marybelle herd.
Substituted at the last minute, the Canadian-bred Rapid Bay UK Belle Java is currently giving 2571 litres, at 4.6% fat and 3.4% protein. “She was clean and well balanced throughout and showed slightly better locomotion than the res, erve cow,” said Mr Reader.
Standing reserve was the champion Holstein exhibit from Thetford-based Ken Proctor, trading under the Patterson name and exhibiting their five-year old cow Airfield Jed Elsie for the first time this year. Elsie will now return home to the 220 pedigree herd where she has already given 10,000 litres, this lactation.
It was a first time major interbreed title win in the sheep section for Gordon and Elizabeth Beddie and their Suffolk ewe lamb. The ewe lamb from the 40-ewe pedigree flock at Swaffam, Norfolk, is sired by Glenisla Grimalda. Taking close res, erve spot was Jim Cresswell and his Hampshire Down ram lamb.
Leading pig showman Brian Upchurch returned to Suffolk triumphant with a British Lop daughter from his last year’s show winner. Greenway Harmony 80 stood reserve last year to her mother Harmony 55 and this year went one better following the trend of the successful line.

Withersfiled Queen Mary 3, a Large White from Shuttleworth College’s Kiddy and Son partnership took the reserve ticket. And in the commercial line up Pete Mortimer took both champion and res, erve places with a Large White cross bacon pig and cutter pig, res, pectively.
