Stirling May Day sale peaks at 12,000gns

A great day was had by the Salers breed at Stirling’s multibreed sale on May Day (1 May), boasting a breed-record-equalling top call of 12,000gns and the highest average on the day.

Nine bulls levelled at £5,635, the best being Drumaglea Kes from Patrick Boyd, Tiree.

He is a grandson of two of the herd’s top female lines – Alicia and Mithril – and knocked down to Malcolm and Gill Pye, Port of Menteith, Stirling, equalling the two joint-record 12,000gns calls at Stirling’s February sale.

Charolais to 8,500gns

Averages lifted in the Charolais ring at Stirling on May Day (1 May) where pedigree and commercial buyers saw bulls £312 dearer on the year to level at £4,587.

Trade topper and show champion was Elgin Lochness from RA Milne and Sons, Elgin, Morayshire, knocking down to Allan Macarthur, Balfron Station, Glasgow.

Elgin Lochness saw a top price of 8,500gns

This son of the 14,000gns easy calver Westcarse Houdini is out of the home-bred Elgin Heidi, a daughter of the 10,000gns Thrunton Alpha.

Next in the money at 8,000gns was Hamish Goldie’s reserve Goldies Lively from Ruthwell, Dumfriesshire. He knocked down to J and A Dunlop, Maybole, Ayrshire.  

The November 2015-born Liveley is out of the 34,000gns Goldies Uppermost daughter Isabele and has Gretnahouse Heman in his line, sire of the top prices Charolais at Carlisle in May last year.

Two sires then hit 6,000gns, with John Irvine and Son, Ballindalloch, Banffshire, trading Inverlochy Lustre to John Whiteford and Son, Cupar, Fife.

He is a Blelack Giggsey son out of a home-bred dam going back to the highly decorated Inverlochy Resolve.

Matching this price tag was Linrossfarm Leo from Edward Scott, Glamis, Angus. Leo is a son of the short gestation, easy calving, Blelack Digger, who caught the eye of G Mccormick Snr, Bridgend, Isle of Islay.

Simmental £275 dearer

A high-quality entry of Simmental bulls saw the Corkie herd reign supreme as the breed levelled at £4,467, seeing bulls £275 dearer for four more sold on the year. 

Topping trade at 7,400gns was the overall champion Corskie Glenfiddich, bred by WJ and J Green of Corskie, Garmouth, Fochabers, Moray. 

This Dirnanean Bradley son is out of a Kilbride Farm Tarrant daughter and headed home with Mr Pearson, Belencowe, Penrith.

Second top price at 7,200gns was the Corskie Global.

This Bel Dhu Capercaillie son out of a Dirnanean Bradley daughter was purchased by JS Fraser of Tore, Muir of Ord, Ross-shire.

Also selling at 7200gns was Islavale Guardian bred by Mr WS Stronach, Grange, Keith, Banffshire.

An Islavale Denzil son out of a Darsham Lucky Strike daughter, he was purchased by A Sharp and Sons, Tough, Alford, Aberdeenshire.

Stirling Limousins to 7,200gns

A larger yarding of bulls saw averages back £331 on the year at Stirling to average £4,025 on 1 May, with 12 bulls making 5,000gns or more and the Goldies herd topping Stirling trade for the fourth consecutive time.

Clearance rates were back on the year at 84% but eight more bulls were sold, as trade rose to 7,200gns for September-2015-born Goldies Liam from Bruce Goldie, Mouswald, Dumfries.

He is out of Goldies Eva and by herd stock bull Foxhillfarm Irishlad and caught the eye of commercial bidders A and H Sim and Son, Monymusk, Inverurie.

Next in the money at 6,500gns and 6,400gns were two offerings from JR MacGregor, Milton of Campsie, Glasgow, with the first being Dyke Lino. He is out of the heifer Dyke Ina and by Netherhall Gilbert, knocking down to J Thomson, Kelty, Fife.

The MacGregors then saw Dyke Luke, another heifer’s calf, this time out of Dyke Icicle and by the 8,500gns Netherhall Gilbert. He went home with H and R Davidson to the Corsairtly herd, Keith, Banffs.

Angus to 6,800gns

An average of 4,097 was hit by Stirling’s bidders with 31 Aberdeen Angus bulls going under the hammer.

The day’s top money went to the trustees of the late Gordon R Brooke, with Rawburn Black Hawk son Linton Gilbertines Lazer, knocking down to Lindsay and Culnaightrie, Auchencairn, Castle Douglas. He is out of Linton Gilbertines lady Roma, a daughter of the 28,000gns Galawater Bentley.
