Versache son shows class at Hereford Society event

In its home city last week, the Hereford Cattle Society saw prices reach 4100gns for another good son of the Panmure herd’s stock bull FS 1 Versache, repeating that herd’s top price deal at last autumn’s fixture.

The 16-month-old Panmure 1 Brooklyn was consigned by Scottish breeder Alec Cant and is out of a senior cow from the herd’s Plum family by leading sire Louada S56 Voyageur.

With a beef value of +17, Brooklyn stood champion under judge John Kemp, who runs the Auckvale herd in Co Durham. Buyer was farm manager Mike Church for A G Wright & Son, Ely, Cambs.

The strong trade for females pushed prices to 3500gns for breed stalwart Denis Jones’ 19-month-old heifer Dendor 1 Libby from his herd at Newtown, Powys.

This daughter of Onondaga 9E Pure Gold is from a successful female line and out of a cow by Costhorpe 1 Manhatten.

She has a beef value of +18 and was one of several cattle bought by breed newcomer Simon Clarke of Burton-on-Trent.

Mr Jones enjoyed a strong trade for a string of bulls. The Dendor 1 Vindicator son Dendor 1 Bonanza realised 3000gns in a joint purchase by Bernard Rimmer of Garstang, Lancs, and Wythenshawe Community Farms, Manchester.

Two other Dendor bulls made 2000gns.

Mr Clarke was back to take five more females for his new herd, including the 26-month-old Titcomb 1 Pinky at 2000gns and herdmate Titcomb 1 Amy at 1900gns.

Among the other bulk bidders was D Oliver from Bodmin, Cornwall.

Also claiming stock for a new herd, he gave 1900gns for the 25-month-old Bosa 1 Sunbeam 242nd from Gerald Blandford & Son of Ledbury, which took the female championship.

Berks vendors Pam, Noel and Robert Snelling sold two heifers carrying the Sarabande prefix at 2000gns and 2500gns.

Both were by the 2003 Bull of the Year Badlingham Bafca.

Averages: 17 bulls 1700. Females – 14 show quality heifers 1825 and 12 cows in- or with calf 1370.
