WELSH BLACK BULLS IN DEMAND:By Jeremy Hunt
A BLISTERING DEMAND for Welsh Black bulls sent prices soaring to 10,800gns at the breed society”s show and sale at Dolgellau.
And it was a day to remember for Llanrwst breeder Emyr Jones, who paraded two of the day”s top earners with 10,800gns paid for his Graig-Goch Gerwyn 17th and 7000gns for Graig-Goch Gerwyn 16th.
The September 2003-bred Gerwyn 17th – the youngest bull in the sale yard – is by Graig-Goch Berwyn 40th and out of a cow from the Ceri family. His paternal grand-dam Marian 15th was the breed”s 1997 Female of the Year. Gerwyn 17th, who stood reserve champion, was bought by E and M Williams, Tywyn, who run the Rhydygarnedd herd.
Mr Jones’ second bull – the 7000gns Graig-Goch Gerwyn 16th – was bought by D William Jenkins, Taliesin, Machynlleth. This 17-month-old son of Mynydd Major stood third in his class under judge Alun Vaughan of Llanrwst.
The day’s second five-figure call came when 10,000gns secured Caerynwch Major 3rd for Robin Price, Rhiwlas, Bala. Consigned by local breeder T Williams, he is by Tallin Major and from the herd”s Gwenfair family.
The bull trade was strong throughout the sale and produced a 6400gns bid for Llwynsarn Cawr 3rd. Consigned by H Jones, Dolgellau, this son of Neuadd Dafydd Ddu 190th stood second in his class and joins the herd of Emyr Wyn Jones at Bala.
From the Elite health status herd of Harlech breeder Elwyn Pryce Evans came the April 2003-bred bull Gerddi Cyfhebog 59th, a son of Gerddi Cyfhebog 59th. He was the only bull in the sale bred in an organically-managed herd and realised 4000gns to Evan Pugh, Gwynedd.
Collecting the championship and making 4200gns was Ysguboriau Llywelyn 36th from R ap Simon Jones MBE, Tywyn, Gwynedd. He is by Ysguboriau Llywelyn 28th and was bought by William T Davies, Tywyn.
Maiden heifers were led by Graig-Goch Bet 41st which made 2650gns. She was another from the successful entry shown by Emyr Jones and was bought by new breeders Wyn Evans and Amanda Johnson, who are setting up a herd in Carmarthenshire. Wyn is stockman to the Berem herd, recently established by Enzo Sauro at Llanelli.
