Beeston coloured cows sell to 2500gns

Shropshire farmers Jack and Barclay Taylor creamed off several of the day’s leading prices at this week’s sale of coloured dairy cattle at Beeston Castle Auction earning the highest bid of 2500gns with a freshly calved red and white Holstein heifer.

Burnbrae Kian Recsie Red, from their herd at Myddle, Shrewsbury, had calved in early February and was giving 30kg on the day. By the Dutch proven sire Kian, she is out of a 9500kg dam by Stadel. Buyer was Chris Tams, Marston, Stafford.

Leading the Ayrshires at 2000gns was an unregistered freshly calved heifer from Graham and Barbara Bell, Tarporley, Cheshire. By Bankend Brown Bomber, this heifer is out of an eight lactation Cuthill Towers sired dam. Buyer was A C Mycock, Stone, Staffordshire.

Crewe buyer D M Riley was determined to take home a wagon load from the Taylor’s consignment. He gave 1850gns for an in-calf heifer by Kian and out of an 11,400kg dam by Starstruck J Paradox Red as well as two Dutch-bred fresh fourth calvers at 1700gns and 1600gns and a first-cross Brown Swiss heifer – by Webscott Toyboy and out of a Weeton Major Luke dam – at 2450gns.

Cheshire Shorthorn breeders Geoff and Sue Royle from Dunham Massey led the breed section with the Hooton Fair Achievement grand-daughter Dunham Duchess Ann 68th at 1900gns taken by Llandudno buyer E G Thomas.

Sharing the wagon ride home were two unregistered Shorthorn heifers by Rodway Prince – also from the Bell’s consignment – at 1850gns apiece.

Mr Riley made the best bid for Jerseys paying 1400gns for Plardiwick Estelle from J D and H E Allen, Stafford. This calved heifer is by Valleystream Julian and out of a Q Hirse dam.

The sale included the dispersal of the Pimhill Jersey herd owned by organic guru Richard Mayall and his daughter Ginny. Prices peaked at 1580gns for a Jersey cross Holstein second calver taken by local buyer R and S Homer, Tarporley.
