It was back to business as usual after the Christmas and New Year break at Bakewell Market. There were useful entries of stock with 593 cattle and 2,801 sheep on offer.
Cattle sections saw a very buoyant trade with plenty of demand and some outstanding prices achieved. There were 204 store cattle forward with steers selling to £1,240, heifers to £1,080 and in-calf cows to £1,500.
A very useful selection of 154 OTM cattle sold on a great trade with examples to 222p/kg and gross figures up to £1,624.
The best entry of finished cattle for many weeks amounted to 146 animals selling to 242p and an outstanding £1,910. There was no shortage of demand for the 89 calves on offer with bulls to £308 and heifers £398.
The sheep department was busy with 2,801 on offer, but trade was hard work. The best hoggs reached 198p and the top gross figure was £84.50, but the overall SQQ average was only 143.7p indicating that the sheep trade is still in the doldrums. The 580 cull ewes peaked at £131 for the very best but the mixed entry levelled at an overall average of £52.16, a fraction less than last week.
