Carlisle store cattle meet massive demand

Store cattle met an unprecedented demand at Carlisle yesterday with the 1278 cattle on offer snapped up by an eager ringside which included 56 bidders from outside Cumbria.

Topping the sale was a Limousin steer from T B Stamper of Rose Farm at £1240, while the overall entry levelled at £816.38, a tremendous average, said auctioneers Harrison and Hetherington.

Leading the pre-sale show was another Limousin sired steer, this time from Messrs E Telfer and Son, Newton High House. This steer, by a registered Saunders bred bull and out of a British Blue x South Devon dam went on to sell for £1100 to the judge Mr Steadman Dodd.

Standing reserve champion and making £1010 in the sale was a Limousin sired heifer from Messrs Sowerby, Sycamore Rise. Buying this one was H Bainbridge, Moorhouse Farm, Yarm.

Other leading prices included a £1200 bid for a British Blue sired bullock from Millerhill, an £1130 bid for another bred the same way from the same home and a £1115 call for another Limousin cross steer from Midtown Farm.
