Champion sells for £1,750 at Caithness
Winning Caithness 21st anniversary show was Iain Gunn, of Murza Farm, Bower, who took the championship with a homebred 26-month-old 691kg British Blue steer, sired by his stock bull Almeley Charlie.
Remarkably, the very first animal to be sold at Quoybrae when it opened 21-years ago was from Murza and bred by Iain’s late father William. The champion was sold for £1,750 to the show judge, Angus Cumming, Tillydesk, Ellon.
The reserve champion was an 18-month-old 548kg Limousin cross heifer from David Kennedy, of Whitegate, Tresdale, Canisbay and sold for £1,380 to David and Val Buchan, Savoch, Longside.
The 1,100 store cattle sold enjoyed a tremendous trade with keen ringside bidding and averages well up on last year.
The 589 steers averaged 242.1p per kg (+48.5p on the year) to a high of 288p per kg and £1,650 gross. The 511 heifers averaged 224.7p per kg (+31.8p on the year) to a high of 284.5p per kg and £1,500 gross.
