Charolais to 8000gns at Borderway Mart

 

Cumbria breeders Mr and Mrs R Jackson form Penrith topped the trade at 8000gns with the bull Lynedraw Galaxy at the British Charolais Cattle Society’s show and sale at Carlisle.

 

Galaxy, who stood second in his class under judge Mr R Rees of the Pennal herd in Powys, is by Mullaghbane Ulliott and out of a cow by Stobarts Upright. Buyers were J and M Davies, Brecon, Powys.

 

Bassett Genie, a son of Harestone Domino from Malton, Yorkshire breeder Miss J Atkinson, collected the male championship and sold for 5200gns. Out of a Thrunton Troubadore cow, Genie goes to Appleby, Cumbria buyers R and M Sowerby and Sons,

 

Newcastle breeders Alan Lawson and Son sold Alsnow General at 5000gns. By the Oldstone Egbert son Corrie Alan, he had a Terminal Sire index of +27 and a Calving Ease Direct EBV of +2.8%. Buyers were T H Vickers and Sons, Bishop Auckland.

 

Also at 5000gns and heading for mid Wales with buyer H P Thomas, Brecon was Millbridge Gladiator from local vendor Judith Hunter, Wigton. He was by Burradon Talisman and had a Terminal Sire index of +24 and a Calving Ease Direct EBV of -9.4%.

 

The Christmas Cracker sale of females was led by Holtstead Emdeholly from F and J and E Andrews, Huddersfield. By Burradon Talisman and in-calf to Blelack Digger, she stood overall champion and made 5500gns to H Whittaker, Tarporley, Cheshire.

 

The 2005-bred cow Bleaklow Anastasia from T W Cox, Bakewell, Derbyshire realised 4300gns. By Gretnahouse Noel, she was suckling a bull calf by Balthayock Aesop and was in-calf to Goldies Eddy. Buyers were Crowhall Farms,  Hexham, Northumberland.

 

Averages: 24 bulls £3640; five “Cracker” females £3843; three served heifers £2642; four maiden heifers £2021 and five cows served and/or suckling £3171.
