Cockermouth sees £4000 show heifer sale

Cockermouth market in the Lake District is the latest to receive its share of the cash being liberally spent this spring by commercial cattle exhibitors with Alistair and Liz Vance digging deep to secure the reserve champion from last Friday’s show and sale of store cattle at £4000.

The heifer, a black Limousin cross entry from Andrew and Karen Nicholson, Swinside End, had stood second in the Limousin heifer class behind the overall champion, another one from the Nicholsons, under judge Willie Seels, Doncaster.

The champion went on to sell for £1650 to the judge and like the reserve champion will no doubt be making an appearance on the show circuit later in the year.

And the Nicholsons also enjoyed success in the steer class when they collected the red ticket in the Limousin bullocks with one which later sold for £1000 to J J Chrichton, Loughrigg. But the top call in this section went to R J and A Y Armstrong, Terrace Farm, when they traded one at £1040.

Also at this money was a British Blue steer from Seatoller Farm and close behind at £1030 was a Blonde steer from Beckside.
