Dairy Event 2010: TB could prove hot topic

DEFRA’s plans to tackle the bovine TB problem look set to be a key topic at this year’s Dairy Event and Livestock Show.



Farm minister Jim Paice is expected to be quizzed about the government’s forthcoming consultation on bovine TB control measures as he tours the show on its opening day (7 September).


Mr Paice confirmed at the CLA Game Fair in July that the government was set to launch a consultation paper in the autumn on whether to allow an industry-funded badger cull.


The document is expected to set out a range of measures including cattle movement controls, vaccination and targeting the reservoir of disease in badgers through implementing a cull.


Press reports on Monday (6 September) claimed that the plan has already won the approval of DEFRA secretary Caroline Spelman and the consultation will be issued before the end of the month.
