Demand for lighter weight lambs at Knighton

An entry of 1,488 prime lambs and 538 cull sheep were forward at Knighton market last week.

Overall lamb trade averaged 179.18 pence a kilo with demand on lighter weight lambs selling to 200 pence a kilo for 29 kilo Texel x lambs to £58 a head from GS Evans and Son, Treluggas. Well fleshed heavier lambs sold to 187 pence a kilo for both 44.5 kilo Texel x lambs to £83.20 a head from DE Evans, Field Farm and 47 kilo Charollais x lambs to £87.80 a head from EJ Davies and Son, Little Cwmgilla. Top price a head was £89.50 a head for 51 kilo Texel x lambs from S and F Jones, Llanwen.

A larger entry of ewes met firm buying demand averaging £57.59 a head and selling to £130 a head for Texel ewes from S J C Morris and Sons, Whitcott Evan. Also to £104.50 a head for Texel ewes from Price Bros, Garbett Hall. Mule ewes sold to £78.50 a head from both B W Davies, Castlewright and S J C Morris and Sons, Whitcott Evan. Speckled ewes sold to £61 a head from Edward Partners, Ffoesidoes.
