Double win for Ireland Aberdeen Angus champion

overall champ Angus Husband and wife team Albert and Jennifer De Cogan took the All Ireland Aberdeen Angus championship title for the second year in a row with their stock bull Rosemead Karona J957

Having made the journey up from Castlemartyr, Co Cork, the De Cogan team was tapped out by judge David Evans of the Tree Bridge herd, Middlesbrough, to take the senior and overall championship.

Mr De Cogan described his win as “a phenomenal result to a great year with Karona”, as he has celebrated the male championship win at Balmoral in May, as well as countless local show breed championships this summer.

Karona was purchased privately in November 2011 from Surrey, England-based Angus Stovold, having had a successful show circuit in England culminating in clinching the breed championship at the National Show at Westmorland. He is by Rosemead Jeronne F673 and is out of the Rosemead Junior Eric D453 daughter Rosemead Karlotta F657.

He is breeding well with semen being sold through Dovea and calves on the ground in Northern Ireland as well. He will head to a few local shows this year before retiring for the year.

Commenting on the bull Mr Evans said: “My champion is an excellent example of the breed. Full of flesh, muscle and character, he moves well and has all the attributes needed including a fabulous tail setting and plates.”

Having clinched the junior championship, Matthew Goulding’s September 2009-born bull calf Goulding Janey Mac went on to stand reserve overall champion. By Nightingale Proud Jake and out of one of the herd’s most prolific females Darima Ester A115,  Mint of Liss daughter, this one won his fourth first placing on the bounce and is maternal brother to last year’s All Ireland National Show junior and reserve junior champions.

Janey Mac caught the eye of Mr Evans from the second he entered the ring and he later backed his convictions by purchasing the bull privately for his Tree Bridge herd.

Commenting on the bull he said: “There is something special about this bull indeed. He’s exceptionally long, has great confirmation, head and carriage. His pedigree is combined with proven sire and dam breeding so will no doubt do a great job in our herd.”

Securing the reserve senior honours was Alan and Naomi Morrison, Maguiresbridge, with their March 2012-born heifer Drummeer Blackbird M803. This one is a daughter of the prolific Netherallan Peter Pershore E052 and is out of the former show female Knockadrinan Blackbird G400, a Gigginstown House Drew daughter, who was purchased as a calf at four months old. She has previously been heifer calf champion at the Northern Ireland Calf Show in November last year and was reserve female and reserve overall champion at Balmoral in May this year.

Clinching the reserve junior title and adding to a great day’s showing was Albert and Jennifer De Cogan with their September 2009-born Mogeely Junior M207. By the herd’s other senior herd sire Wedderlie Black Box J935, he is out of Duncanziemere Jody F223, a Newcairnie Pastor Z006 daughter whivch has bred well in the Mogeely herd and has produced Mogeely Joe H979 which has left great calves as well in the herd. Junior has already secured two breed championships this summer and will be offered for sale in the spring.
