Easycare to 1000gns at Worcester

Last Saturday’s Society sale of Easycare sheep at Worcester saw a discerning crowd of buyers from across the country converge on the sale ring to seek out the best of the sheep on offer.

Leading the sale was a shearling ram from Derek Steen, Dumfriesshire. This one sold at 1000gns to join Graham Shepherd, Preston. 1000gns easycare worcester Sept 2011.jpg

At 860gns was another shearling, this time from J O Adams and Son, Northampton, with this one selling to R R Jones, Presteigne, Powys.

And selling at 850gns was a shearling from H V and M W Thomas, with this one, a Myo-Max carrier selling to Derek Steen.

Best of the sale in shearling ewes was a £200 call from Mr Steen, when buying a pen of shearlings from Mr Shepherd.

One crop ewes were also sought after and sold to a peak of £125 for a pen from T W Steele, Pershore, Worcestershire, with these being knocked down to W D Steele, Henley In Arden, Warwickshire.

The older ewes in the sale sold particularly well to a strong demand, with a run of 152 from breed secretary Iolo Owen all selling at £118/head to F J Prouse, Buckland Brewer, Devon.

Overall Mr Owen said breeders were satisfied with the trade, but the lack of grass in many parts of the midlands had prevented some buyers from bidding more strongly and buying greater numbers. “We had an exceptional number of people at the sale and the interest in the breed continues to grow. The best of the stock sold exceptionally well and there is clearly a growing appetite for more good quality sheep.”

Averages; 881 breeding Ewes £114.31, 215 ewe Lambs £80.64, 46 rams   £348.10, two ram lambs£257.25 (McCartneys).
