Experts warn of mould and toxic contamination in grain
Farmers could see an increase in mould and toxic contamination, threatening the livelihood of grain farmers and feed manufacturers, after the UK was hit by the wettest summer on record this year, warn experts.
Agricultural specialists, Agil, advised producers and manufacturers to treat and combat the mould and toxins immediately with anti-mould inhibitors and toxin inhibitors.
“After a wet summer like this with poor harvest conditions, moulds such as Fusarium and Aspergillus can be found on standing crops,” says Murray Hyden, Agil’s managing director. “If not treated, these moulds can seriously impact on yields, profits and animal health.”
Met Office figures show that most regions in the UK, apart from North Wales, South East and North West England, had been hit by over twice the average rainfall
between May – August.
