Gossington Holsteins meet firm demand

The dispersal sale of the Gossington Holstein Friesian milking herd and in-calf heifers for Ken Moss, Slimbridge, Gloucestershire, saw prices hit a high of 2500gns on two occasions for calved heifers.

Both of the sale leaders were sired by Shanael Duplex Peru. First to make the top money was Gossington Peru Fantail purchased by J M Lowe of Hereford, and nine lots later Gossington Peru Fiona out of a 10,793kg dam was sold to A R Cozens of Stonehouse, Gloucestershire.

Berkshire based milk producers Yattendon Estate,Thatcham, purchased 32 cattle including two at 2350gns, the Critchel Principal sired heifer Gossington Principal Ann out of a 10,933kg Picston Shottle dam, and Gossington Result Esta, a grading up heifer by Moet Result off a 13,451kg dam. They also bought the top priced non-pedigree heifer at 2250gns.

Leading the cow section was third calver Gossington Jordan Helen Red which had recorded 10,379kg in her last lactation. The Ja Bob Jordan Red daughter was purchased by H H and D M Wall, Ludlow, Shropshire, for 2,350gns.   

Following that at 2250gns was second calver Gossington Amateur Fillpail which went to J M Lowe, Hereford. The Ba Bob Amateur daughter of a 12,408kg dam had recorded 7174kg as a heifer.

The large group of in-calf heifers sold to 1700gns for the late September calving Gossington Mason Vera, a daughter of Eastview Jason and out of a 10,183kg Weeton Jackson dam.  She was one of 25 cattle purchased by D W, E N and D G N Richards, Pontyberem, Carmarthenshire.

Averages; 264 cows and calved heifers ÂŁ1165.66, 78 served heifers ÂŁ1077.73 (Gwilym Richards).
