Graylen flock dominates top prices at Hampshire Down sale, Carlisle
Graham and Judith’s Graylen flock dominated the Hampshire Down sale, Borderway Mart, Carlisle, on the weekend (27 September), taking the day’s four top prices.
Sale leader at 650gns was their shearling ewe Graylen 24Y13103 (1) sired by Graylen 10008 D’Artagnan and out of a dam by Kelsey 61 Duvall. She sold in lamb to Millfields 12093 Foyle, the national champion, and was purchased by E and A Thompson, Kendal, Cumbria.
Not far behind this at 800gns was their second prize shearling gimmer by the same sire and out of a Millfields 6240 Buster dam. She sold in lamb to Clogherny 14052 Hogan, who is within the breed’s top 5% for growth and muscle, and was snapped up by I Milne, Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire.
G Mountain, North Rigton, Yorkshire, paid 700gns for a Graylen first prize, two shear ewe, again by the same sire, but out of a Parkstock 06 Warrior dam. She also sold in lamb to Clogherny.
Two lots made 650gns. First of these was a second prize Graylen ewe lamb sired by Greenwell 13001 Endowed. Buyer was P Strickland, Lancaster, Lancashire.
At the same money was a ewe lamb from the Wattisfield flock of EJ Cresswell, Norfolk. Sired by Wattisfield 13180 Top Deck and out of a homebred dam, this one was the pick of H Hindmarch, Bishop Auckland, Co Durham.
The male section topped at 500gns thrice.
First at this money was a shearling ram from E and B and SA Jones’ Maesglas flock, Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire. Sired by Maesglas 9558 Trevor this one is out of a homebred dam by Measglas 227 Haystacks. Highest bidder was R Dewey, By St Andrews, Fife.
Next at 500gns was another Maesglas shearling ram, bred by Aspley 8072 Mosley and out of a homebred dam. This one headed home with D Steel, Cleish, Kinross.
Last at 500gns was a ram lamb from Bethany Phillips’ Greenwell flock, Blaydon Burn, Tyne and Wear. Sired by Greenweel 13001 Endowed he is out of a dam by Welham 1000005 Fenman and sold to TI Hunter, Louth, Lincolnshire.
Averages: 17 ewes, £307.59; 14 shearling gimmer, £457.50; four ewe lambs, £577.50; six shearling rams, £355.25; and four lamb rams, £328.13.
