Farmers urged to join Welsh animal health group

Wales is to have a new animal health and welfare group to advise the Welsh government on disease control and eradication.

The government is hoping to draw farmers, vets and representatives from the farming industry onto the new Animal Health and Welfare Framework Group.

It comes as Wales prepares to establish a new 10-year framework to succeed the Great Britain Animal Health and Welfare Strategy.

Chief veterinary office for Wales, Professor Christianne Glossop, said the new group would advise the Welsh government on prevention, control and eradication of animal disease to improve the health and welfare of livestock and companion animals.

“In developing the framework, we are keen to ensure that we take into account the very best guidance, advice and expertise to help us develop our vision for the future of animal health and welfare in Wales. I would encourage anyone with the relevant experience and right expertise to apply for these posts,” she said.

“Disease outbreaks and the measures to control them can carry wide and costly consequences for public health, the economy and the environment and achieving high standards of animal health and welfare is important to all of us.”
