Police find 73 dead sheep on farm in the Durham Dales

The death of 73 sheep at a farm in the Durham Dales is being investigated by officials from the Royal Society for The Protection of Animals.

Durham police officers and RSPCA inspectors attended the farm last Thursday (7 February) after a call from a member of the public. Shortly after the carcasses of the dead animals were found and an investigation was launched.

Experts examined sheep from the farm and have reassured farmers that no risk of disease or infection is posed to neighbouring farms.

A RSPCA representative said: “The RSPCA has been advised by vets who examined the sheep that no infectious diseases were found at the location.”

The RSPCA has launched a full investigation to find how the animals died.

Inspector Kevin Tuck, from Barnard Castle police, said: “Police attended a farm in Baldersdale on Thursday night after reports of a number of dead sheep in fields.”

“The RSPCA are leading an investigation to determine exactly what has happened.”

“Tests have revealed there is no threat of infection to neighbouring farms and fields.”

On Monday a man was interviewed by RSPCA inspectors at Barnard Castle police station.
