Heifers dominate Western Holstein sale

Heifers led the way at last week’s Western Holstein Club show and sale at Beeston Castle, with Painley Smuelo Lana 53 from J and V Barlow, Carmarthen, selling for a top price of 4100gns. She is a daughter of Regancrest-Mr Samualo with two EX dams and a 9000gns sister and sold to Lyn Davies of the Carmarthenshire-based Meurig Herd.

The same buyer also bought Whinchat Mailing Honey, by Poly Kow Mailing from A C Birkle, Carmarthen, for the next best price of 3100gns. This one was bred from nine generations of VG/EX dams.

This was closely followed by Crosslanes Shottle Redtop 31, from Alastair Dobson, Cholmondeley, which went for 3000gns. This milky heifer was giving 43kg/day and sold to Hywel and Sheila Evans of Llansilin, Oswestry.

Pre-sale show champion and top price cow, Rowarton Milkstar Favourite, a daughter of Deslacs Milkstar, went for 2800gns. She was sold by Roger and Pat Sutton, Congleton, to the show judge, Richard Thomas, Carmarthen.

The next best was Enchanted Jasper Rolls from Enchanted Holsteins, Preston, when she sold for 2500gns to David Alderson, Northallerton. This price was also met by J J and J D Hughes’s, Clayford Chameleon Violet 19 which sold to Mr Davies.

The reserve champion was the heifer, Leamington Roy Lana. She is a daughter of Roylane Jordan and out of a Convincer dam from D and E Trice of Leamington, Warwickshire. She sold for 2400gns to A R Cox and Son, Stafford.
