Hereford Autumn show and sale tops 5,000gns

Topping the trade at the Autumn Hereford Cattle Society show and sale was Kinglee 1 Kevin. The 21 month old, bred by Peter Cobley, Stoney Stanton, Leicestershire, was sired by the 2010 Hereford bull of the year, Leos Pride 1 Ellis. Weighing 965kgs, Kevin sold for 5,000 gns to Englefield Herefords, Theale, Berkshire.

Next at 4,300gns was Tim and William Livesey’s 24-month-old Normanton 1 Kalidescope, from Normanton le Heath, Leicestershire. By their home-bred 2011 Hereford bull of the year Normanton 1 Eastern Promise,  Kalidescope took the Grand and Senior Male Championships. A qualified Hereford Cattle Society superior carcase sire, he gives commercial users a calf bonus of up to £500. He sold weighing 1,005kgs to commercial beef producers, Portman Burtley Estates, Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire.

Messrs J A Cameron and Son, Leven, Fife, sold their 19-month-old Baldinnie 1 Diavlo for 4,000 gns to Messrs R and R I Shaw, Hallwood Herefords, and Nicholas and Heath, Gowybank Herefords, Cheshire.  Weighing 925 kgs, Diavlo was sired by Dorepoll 1 499 Einsteine.

Down from Scotland Mrs J M Cant and Partners, Arbroath, Angus, sold their 18-month-old Panmure 1 Karl, weighing 920 kgs, for 3,600 gns to P Cobley, Kinglee Herefords – breeder of the sale’s top price selling bull.

Messrs Livesey returned to take the Junior Male Championship with their 17-month-old Normanton 1 Krypton, sired by Dendor 1 Harinordoquy.  Krypton, weighing 840 kgs, sold for 3,400 gns to dairy producers, F G Brewer and Sons, St Columb, Cornwall.

Close behind was one of the youngest bulls in the sale. J R B Wilson and Sons, Kelso, sold 13-month-old Romany 1 Lionheart RE L9 (weighing 630 kgs) by Spurstow 1 Recruit 1st, for 3,300 gns to G Hughes, Wrexham, North Wales.

Six bulls all sold for 3,000gns a piece. Messrs Brewer purchased 17-month-old Dieulacresse Knoby, weighing 805 kgs, by Haven Governor, from T A Spooner, Leek, Staffordshire.

Messrs Wilson purchased 18-month-old Fardre 1 Hi Hidalgo K956, from G H Morgan, Abergele, Conwy. Sired by Harvie Dan Hidalgo ET 193U out of the Canadian ET cow, Fardre 1 Heidi Hi, Hi Hidalgo, weighing 800 kgs, is a full Canadian bred bull.

Locally bred 17-month-old Free Town Kington, weighing 770 kgs, from R A Bradstock and Partners, Tarrington, Herefordshire, went to J S Chesters and Son, Chesmoor Herefords, Malpas, Cheshire.

W J Hutchings and Sons, Chichester, West Sussex sold 20-month-old Fisher 1 Keystone K365, weighing 780 kgs, to P J and A C Allman, Greenyards Herefords, Sutton St. Nicholas, Hereford.

The same vendors also sold 19-month-old Fisher 1 Kingpin K369, weighing 815 kgs, to D G Jones, Tregaron, Cardiganshire.

The youngest bull in the sale, 13-month-old Dendor 1 Lomax, weighing 600 kgs, by the 2014 Sire of the Year, Solpoll 1 Gilbert, bred by D E, E D and A L Jones of Caersws, Newtown, Powys, sold to K Prettejohn and A Kerslake, Nicholashayne Herefords, Wellington, Somerset.

 

Females

A strong female trade saw all but four of the 38 offered finding a home. Top priced female was Female Champion, 19-month-old in-calf heifer, Lowesmoor 1 Bikini 905. Sired by Fisher 1 Ensign E254, she was purchased by J Barber on behalf of Birch and Brindley, Sky High Herefords, Weston, Stafford for 3,500gns.

The youngest show heifer offered, 12-month-old Romany 1 Dawn ST L50, by Spurstow 1 Star Bright Future, bred and exhibited by J R B Wilson and Sons, Kelso, sold for 3,050 gns to A Thomas, Premier Herefords, Clarbeston, Pembrokeshire.

Exhibitor of the top price bull, Peter Cobley, saw his first prize winning 17-month-old Kinglee 1 Miss 430 sell for 2,800 gns to M Ludgate, Rempstone Herefords, Thame, Oxon.

The Reserve Female Champion, 24-month-old in-calf heifer, Normanton 1 Irina 7th K172, was knocked down at 2,600gns to G E and E Jackson, Marshland Herefords, Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire. Sired by 2011 Bull of the Year, Normanton 1 Eastern Promise she was bred and exhibited by Tim and William Livesey.

Top price in the sale only cows and in-calf heifers was the 30-month-old in-calf heifer, Jethro 1 Maisy. Bred and exhibited by R Edwards, Dunsfold, Surrey, she sold for 2,300 gns to P and S E Lowe, Frenni Herefords, Crymych, Pembrokeshire.

The same buyers also purchased the five year old Lincoln 1 Vanity Rose along with her Spring born bull calf for 2,100 gns from Mrs A J Lincoln, Benenden, Kent.

From the same area, W.J. Hutchings & Sons, Chichester, W. Sussex sold two 2½ year old incalf heifers for 1,800 gns. each – Fisher 1 Eva J353 sold to D. Wilson, Radbrook Herefords, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire and Fisher 1 Cherry J356 to G.J. & E.M. Thomas, Charmily Herefords, Ferwig, Cardiganshire.

Maiden heifers sold to a top of 2,300 gns. for the 24 month old Normanton 1 Amanita 4th K185, purchased by S Chilman, Kinsham Herefords, Presteigne, Powys.

W.J. Hutchings and Sons sold an 18-month-old heifer, Fisher 1 Susan K383, for 1,900 gns to T Verdin, Garnstone Herefords, Dilwyn, Herefordshire.

At the same money was P Cobley’s 17-month-old heifer, Kinglee 1 Georgina 444, who went to D and N Jones, Hollyhead, North Wales.
