Herefords sell to 6,000gns at society spring sale

A top price of 6,000gns and a clearance rate of 99% marked a successful spring show and sale for the Hereford Cattle Society this week (15 April).

 

Making the headline price was the day’s champion 21-month-old Lowesmoor 1 Jockey, exhibited by Mr MJ Clark, Tetbury, Gloucester. By the home-bred sire Lowesmoor 1 Gauloise and weighing 910kgs, he was purchased by Mr MJ Burton, Leigh, Surrey.

Second highest price of the day was paid for the first prize-winning bull, 22-month-old Weybrook 1 Midas, from Mr HA Hatt, Basingstoke, Hampshire. By Dendor 1 Flinder and out of Weybrook 1 Mink 5th, he sold for 5,800gns. to Mr and Mrs MGS Gibson, Marlborough, Wiltshire.

Next with a bid of 4,500gns was Messrs Cant’s 16-month-old Panmure 1 Knightsman, a Superior Carcase Sire and a son of Volcano. Purchaser Fir Farm, Firbosa Herefords, Stow-on-the-Wold, Gloucestershire.

Just shy of this at 4,100gns was the first bull through the ring, 26-month-old Sigston 1 Jupiter by Masefield 1 Colarado and from Mrs JA Walker, Northallerton, North Yorkshire. He was purchased by NJ and BA Turner and Son, Abergavenny, Monmouthshire.

 

Two bulls made 4,000gns. First of these was 24-month-old Fisher 1 Jenson from WJ Hutchings and Sons, Chichester, West Sussex. Sired by Allendale Waterloo he sold to Stratfield Saye Farms, Reading, Berkshire, weighing 870kg.

 

Next at this money was 23-month-old Lanscombe 1 Oh No from Mr RA Mitchell, Dorchester, Dorset, Sired by Brangwyn 1 Emperor he was purchased by J and E Thornhill, Poynton Herefords, Shrewsbury, Shropshire.

 

Females

 

Female trade peaked at 4,500gns for the 17-month-old heifer Romany 1 Plum D1 K58 from JRB Wilson and Sons of Kelso, Borders. Sired by SMH Castro she travelled home with breed newcomers Martel Herefords, Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire.

The second highest price heifer was the 24-month-old in-calf reserve champion Dendor 1 Myrtle 11, from by Messrs DE ED and AL Jones of Caersws, Powys. She sold for 4,200gns to Mr B Head, Barnt Green Herefords, Barnt Green, Birmingham.

 

The champion heifer, 15-month-old Panmure 1 Blessing K11 from Messrs Cant Arbroath, Angus, sold for 2,450gns to Mr AJ Thomas, Premier Herefords, Narberth, Pembrokeshire.
