Great British Calf Week puts focus on rearing data

A focus on using data to make informed decisions in calf rearing on the farm and in the supply chain is underpinning this year’s Great British Calf Week.
Now in its fourth year, Great British Calf Week starts on 10 September, and is co-ordinated by the AHDB and Calf Action Network (CAN).
The week will start with UK Dairy Day and feature a range of events led by stakeholders across the industry.

These include webinars, farm walks and on-farm activities, focusing on topics such as genetics, calf health and maximising calf value.
AHDB’s engagement manager for beef and lamb, Karl Pendlebury, said:
“It’s great to be collaborating with stakeholders across the industry, including farmers, vets and other organisations, to share knowledge around the importance of ensuring all calves are reared with care and purpose.”
Improving calf management systems
During the week, the progress industry has made will be championed and provide farmers with the latest information to improve their calf management systems.
The week will further focus on topics including respiratory disease, environmental footprint and using genetics to produce market-ready carcasses.
Catherine Carlton, livestock project assistant at Innovation for Agriculture and co-ordinator of CAN, said: “Our focus is on prioritising calf health and welfare, which in turn drives profitability for farmers.”
Networking opportunities
The calf week events offer an opportunity for the industry to connect, learn and inspire one another.
Throughout the week, events will be held covering the full rearing process – from newborn care to weaning and beyond – exploring the latest research, innovative practices, and real-world case studies.
“The aim is to spark conversation, encourage collaboration, and promote efficient, welfare-focused approaches to calf rearing across the industry,” she added.
