Knuckleduster beats off competition to take 5,050gns top price at Hereford sale

The 13 month old Dendor 1 Knuckleduster, bred & exhibited by DE, ED and AL Jones of Newtown, Powys topped Saturday’s Hereford autumn show and sale at 5,050gns. Knuckleduster a previous show winner, having taken the junior male championship at the National Poll Show in September, is by the Danish imported bull, SMH Euro 30E and was purchased by MJ and HM Timmis, Shraden Herefords, Baschurch, Shrewsbury.

Messrs Timmis also purchased the second highest priced lot of the day, 19 month old Baldinnie 1 Victory sired by Baldinnie 1 Orient and bred and exhibited by JA Cameron and Son from Leven, Fife for 5,000gns.

Victory another previous show champion whose successes include National Calf Show and Forfar Calf Show Championships in 2012, Reserve Junior Male Champion Royal Highland Show and overall Male & Reserve Supreme Scottish National Show and Reserve Native Bred Bull, Perth in 2013.

The first bull through the ring, 23 month old Hallwood 1 Jethro sired by the well-known show bull Solpoll 1 Dynamite was bred and exhibited by R and RI Shaw, South Wirral Cheshire and sold for 4,500gns to newcomers to the breed, GJ and EM Thomas, Charmily Herefords, Cardigan, Dyfed. Jethro again a previous show winner having taken the male championship at Shropshire County Show and reserve male championship at the Stafford and Cheshire County Shows.

Messrs W and R Kemp and Sons, Bishop Auckland, Co Durham saw their two superior carcass sires, 19 month old Auckvale Jag and 17 month old Auckvale Jackpot sell for 4,500 gns and 4,000 gns respectively. Both bulls with Terminal Sire and Self Replacing Indexes in the top 1% of the Bbreed. Jag, male champion at Northumberland County Show and by the home-bred bull Auckvale Broadside, was purchased by Mr and Mrs A Miller, Alanna Herefords, St. Austell, Cornwall. Jackpot, is by the home-bred sire Auckvale Advance, was purchased by R Mackenzie and Sons, Perth.

19 Bulls sold for £61,845.00 to Average £3,255.00

The show female Section was a success story for the Scottish breeders in attendance, the reserve female championship going to JA Cameron and Son of Fife with their 19 month old Baldinnie 1 Ruth 30th sired by Baldinnie 1 Orient selling for 3,300 gns to HA Hatt, Weybrook Herefords, Basingstoke, Hampshire.

However, top price of the day went to fellow Scottish breeders, JRB Wilson and Sons of Kelso who saw their 11 month old Romany 1 Julia RE K61 by Spurstow 1 Recruit 1st sell for 4,700 gnsto GH Morgan, Fardre Herefords, Abergele, Conwy.H

12 show heifers sold for £29,642.50 to average £2,470.20.
