Bidding hit a high of 9,000gns when Limousin bulls and females went under the hammer at the society’s sale in Brecon on the weekend.
Averages were up £301 on the year, with 32 bulls sold levelling at £3,750, representing a clearance rate of 73%.
Sale leader was the stylish January-2012-born Mynach Harlequin, from ED Griiffiths and Co, Whitland, Carmarthenshire. By the 27,000gns Greenwell Dreamboy he is out of the Sable-sired Mynach Burgandy. He headed back to Carmarthen with DR Price, Llangadog, for their Garreglwyd pedigree herd. Earlier in the day he picked up the pre-sale show supreme championship under judge Colin Phillips who runs the noted Powerhouse Herd at The Batch, Weobley, Herefordshire.
Commenting on his Champion bull, the judge Colin Phillips said: “Mynach Harlequin just ticked all the boxes for me. He is a true-to-type Limousin, he is long, clean, has a good top and is very square over the rump. Very correct, he had style, good locomotion, and is a bull that would do a job in either a pedigree or commercial herd.”
The day’s second top price of 7,200gns went to the reserve supreme champion Dyfri Hercules, from Messrs DG and MJ Edwards, Llandovery, Carms. This one-year-old bull is by the 50,000gns bull Wilodge Cerberus and is out of Dyfri Ujour, who was also the dam of the 10,000gns Dyfri Casanova, and who goes back to the noted cow Tanhill Toujour.
With a strong Beef Value of LM+35 and with good calving figures, Dyfri Hercules was purchased by A Thomas, Knighton, Powys, who run the Monaughty pedigree herd.
Selling at 6,200gns was the day’s junior champion, Garyvaughan Hoover from Mr CV Lewis, Welshpool, Powys. This May 2012 born bull is by the herd’s noted stock bull, the 35,000gns Plumtree Deus, and is out of Garyvaughan Clover, a Brockhurst Torrington daughter. This was a first section title at Brecon for the Garyvaughan herd, which won the 2012 Champion Herd title in the North West Midlands & North Wales Limousin Herd Competition. Purchasing Garyvaughan Hoover were C and S Thomas, Kinnersley, Hereford.
At 5,000gns was the March 2012-born Ashledge Harrier from Messrs AG Kirton and Sons, Kinlet, Bewdley. This bull, a first prize-winner, is by the Ronick Hawk son Kendrom Acracker and is out of the homebred Ashledge Amethyst. Purchaser was the locally-based DI Davies and Co, Brecon, Powys.
