Limousin bulls top 5,500gns at Brecon

Leading trade at Brecon Limousin sale on the weekend (10 May) with a bid of 5,500gns when selling his first bull at auction was D Thomas, Llanbydder, Carmarthenshire.

His September 2012-born Teifi Hector is sired by the prolific AI sire Wilodge Tonka and is out of Winnington Veronique. He won the reserve senior championship in the pre-sale show before selling to WI and J Adams, Tir Canol Farm, Cwmtwrch, Swansea.

 

Next best with a bid of 5,100gns was Powys-based CL and FE Jerman, when selling their first prize May 2012-born bull Glangwden Hull to DL Owens and Sons, Brecon, Powys. Hull is by the Objat son Powerhouse Emblem and is out of the Haltcliffe Ullswater daughter Glangwden Dewdrop.

It was the overall supreme champion from noted Powerhouse herd of Colin and Wendy Phillips, from Weobley, Herefordshire, that sold for the next top price of 5,000gns. Their March 2012-born bull Powerhouse Hollywood is the first bull to be sold at auction by the Objat son Powerhouse Elite and out of the Ulm-sired Powerhouse Emerald.

The win cemented the Phillips family their first championship at a society sale. Commenting on his champion judge Ken Jones said:  “The Champion bull is tremendously powerful, very correct, and is good on his legs.  He’s a ‘real’ Limousin bull with plenty of hard, natural muscle.” Purchasers were Messrs Price and Price, Newtown, Powys.

 

Hot on the heels of their impressive sale debut at Carlisle, Michael and Melanie Alford, Cullompton, Devon, secured a 5,000gns bid when selling their first prize-winner Foxhillfarm Igor. Igor, born in March 2013, carries a Beef Value of LM+42. He is another embryo calf by the 42,000gns Wilodge Vantastic and out of the 15,000gns Bankdale Alice. Purchaser was E Davies,  Much Wenlock, Shropshire.

 

Securing a final bid of 4,600gns from R J Price and Co, Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, was Loosebeare Hunky consigned by Messrs EW Quick and Sons, Crediton, Devon. Born in August 2012, Hunky (LM+38) is by the 17,000gns Sympa son Aghadolgan Emperor, and is out of the eleven-year-old cow Loosebeare Upoppy.

 

The reserve junior champion Reddragon Habana from TE Price and HE Griffiths, Trelech, Carmarthen, made 4,500gs when he was knocked down to Davies Bros, Garth, Builth Wells. Habana is by the Vagabond-sired Greenwell Fantastic and is out of the Sable daughter Mynach Elderflower. He won the Best Young Bull award in the South Wales and Mid-West Limousin Club Herd Competition in 2013.

 

Miss C Williams, Shifnal, Shropshire, sold Wilodge Homerun for 4,350gns to EL and SM Rees, Newnham on Severn, Gloucestershire. By the Sympa son Ampertaine Bravo, and out of the 9,000gns Wilodge Cerberus daughter, Whinfellpark Fanzine.

 

Dinmore Haak was next best when realising 4,300gns to TV Jones, Whitney on Wye, Herefordshire. A November 2012-born embryo calf by Carmorn Copilot and out of the 2007 Royal Show Interbreed Champion Newstart Upsydaisy, Dinmore Haak was sold with a Beef Value of LM+33 by Paul Dawes, Kipperknowle Farm, Dinmore Manor, Hereford.

 

The junior and reserve champion, Garyvaughan Hupid, from CV and EM Lewis and Sons, Buttington, Welshpool was purchased for 4,200gns by G and A Orrells, Abermule, Newtown. November 2012-born, he is by the prolific sire, Plumtree Deus, whose first 27 sons have averaged 8,500gns, and is out of the homebred Garyvaughan Cupid.

 

Leading female trade at 2,750gns was the champion Mynach Helana from ED Griffiths, Cwmfelin Mynach, Whitland. By Greenwell Enrique, a son of the £18,900 French-bred Balbo, and out of the Sable-sired dam Mynach Delana, this two-year-old maiden heifer was purchased by RW and CS Richards, Craswell, Hereford, who also purchased Mynach Hessa for 2,000gns.

 

Averages:37 bulls, £3,653.72; 14 heifers, £1,770; one cow and calf, £1,732.50 (74% clearance).
