Limousins sell to 27,000gns at Borderway Mart, Carlisle

Limousins sold to a high of 27,000gns at Borderway Mart, Carlisle, on the weekend (18 October), where solid trade saw 84 bulls sell to average £5,570.


Nine more bulls sold on the year to achieve a 61% clearance rate.


Sale leader was the supreme champion Loosebeare Iain, from Messrs EW Quick and Son, Crediton, Devon. Born in January 2013 he is the first son of Loosebeare Fantastic, a Wilodge Vantastic son, to be offered for sale and is out of the Hatcliffe Anzac daughter Loosebeare Elite.

He won interbreed champion at the Royal Cornwall and Devon shows. He sold to Tony Booth, Aston, Sheffield, carrying a beef value of LM+45, within the top 1% of the breed.  The Quick family’s team of five bulls grossed 49,000gns.


He was followed by four bids of 13,000gns.


The first of these was for Rahoney Isaac, a March 2013-born embryo calf from H and D MacFarland, Trillick, Co. Tyrone.  This first prize bull is by Haltcliffe Dancer and is out of the seven-year-old Tanat Mostyn-sired cow Rahoney Velma.  Buyer was Harry Emslie Peterhead, Aberdeenshire.

Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton, Penrith, achieved their best price to date of 13,000gns when they sold their 19-month-old Whinfellpark Lago to ES and E Norman, Little Orton, Carlisle.

By the herd’s 30,000gns stock bull Lowerffrydd Empire he is out of the Wilodge Cerberus-sired Whinfellpark Flair and carries a beef value of LM+46.

Leading Co Derry’s James McKay’s line up of six bulls was Ampertaine Interest. Born in May 2013 he is sired by the Glenrock Ventura son Ampertaine Elgin and is out of the Ampertaine Abracadabra daughter Ampertaine Finesse. Purchaser was EH Pennie and Son for their Sarkley herd, Montgomery, Powys.


Another Ampertaine Elgin son from the McKay family, Ampertaine Impact, also made 13,000gns when selling to the Turville herd of HB and LJ Lear, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. Impact, a maternal brother to the 20,000gns Ampertaine Commander, is out of the Sympa cow Ampertaine Annabella. Born in June 2013 he stood second in this junior class. Altogether six Ampertaine bulls grossed 51,200gns.

A flurry of bids saw six bulls gross 10,000gns.


One of the bulls to hit this five-figure sum was the reserve intermediate champion Rahoney Isiah from the Rahoney herd and bred the same-way as their previous bull. Like his stablemate he too headed north with WJ Jack and Sons, Muir of Ord, Ross-shire.


The reserve senior champion Culnagechan Ibrox from Derek Hume, Randalstown, Co Antrim, was knocked down at 10,000gns. By the herd’s stock sire Carmorn Copilot he is out of the Ampertaine Abracadabra daughter Culnagechan Espana. Buyer was Gaich Farms, Grantown on Spey, Morayshire.


Allanfauld Ibrox from A MacGregor, Allanfauld, Glasgow, made 10,000gns when selling to the newly-established commercial beef herd of A Bunting and Son, New Abbey, Dumfries. He was awarded the reserve male champion ticket at the Stars of the Future Show in 2013 and is by the prolific Wilodge Tonka.


ES and E Norman, Little Orton Farm, Little Orton, Carlisle, grossed 22,500gns for a pen of three bulls by their stock bull, the 24,000gns Claragh Franco.  Their top achiever at 10,000gns was the second prize junior bullNorman Ivan.  Sired by Franco, this bull is out of Norman Delight, a daughter of the herd’s noted Heathmount Trojan. Buyers were BG and DE Marrs, Cockermouth, Cumbria.


Ian Nimmo also achieved 10,000gns when he sold Maraiscote Imperial to W and T Nelson, Ballantrae, Girvan. By the herd’s prolific sire Goldies Comet, which cost 23,000gns, he is out of the Normande Urquhart daughter Maraiscote Cookie.


A final bid of 10,000gns went to  Parkwall Impossible from James McParland, Beleeks, Newry, Northern Ireland. .  This January 2013 bull is an embryo calf by the noted Carmorn Copilot and is out of the 12,500gns Wilodge Navette a Broadmeadows Cannon daughter. Buyer was DR Owen and Son, Tywyn, Gwynedd, who also purchased the reserve junior champion Ampertaine Invader for 8,000gns.


Averages: 25 senior bulls, £5,838.44; 29 intermediate bulls, £5, 368.10; 30 junior bulls, £5,551.
