Watch early sow feeding
WHEN PIGLETS are born a decent size but in poor condition, placental growth has been adequate but nutrient flow to piglets when flesh is being laid down is compromised, says JSR Genetics.
This indicates inadequate feeding of the sow in the last three weeks of pregnancy. Small piglet birth weights indicate poor placental growth during the first half of pregnancy.
When this occurs, JSR Genetics’ vet consultant Mark White advises assessing the feeding of the sow in the first half of pregnancy.
