Longhorn reduction reaches 2000gns at Worcester

The Major Reduction Sale of Longhorn cattle from Chris and Ceri Morgan’s Cwrt Henllys herd, Cwmbran, enjoyed a keen and brisk following for all sections of the sale.

Top price levelled at 2000gns for a home bred bull ‘Cwrt Henllys Secundus 2nd’, a 3½ year old son of ‘Mayhill Secundus’ and out of ‘Mayhill Christine’, a ‘Bulford Freddy’ cow that sired the 8400gns ‘Carreg Cennen’, secured by R J Fuller, Ely, Cambs.

Cows and calves ere hotly contested peaking at 1700gns for ‘Cwrt Henllys Fettucine’, another ‘Mayhill Secundus’ daughter with a heifer calf at foot by ‘Blackbrook Owl’ being purchased by N Fuller, Woldingham, Surrey.

John Mellin the well known Texel breeder from Skipton, North Yorkshire, opened an account with the Longhorn breed and took nine purchases including ‘Carreg Bonda’ with heifer calf at foot and ‘Cwrt Henllys Holly’ also with heifer calf at foot, both at 1580gns. 

He also secured one of the joint top price maiden heifers ‘Cwrt Henllys Irish Cream’, a ‘Blackbrook Owl’ daughter at 860gns. The other maiden heifer at the same joint top price ‘Cwrt Henllys Imogen’, also by Blackbrook Owl’ went to local breeder David Morgan Farms, Barry, Vale of Glamorgan.  David Morgan also took the top prices in calf heifer, ‘Cwrt Henllys Gayle’, a spring calver to ‘Blackbrook Owl’ at 1380gns.

Longhorn steers also enjoyed spirited demand selling to a top of ÂŁ700.

Averages; 11 cows with heifer calves ÂŁ1250.45, three cows with bull calves ÂŁ1106.00, two Cows in calf ÂŁ934.50, eight heifers in calf ÂŁ1126.50, two heifers running with bull ÂŁ1197.00,

 11 Maiden Heifers ÂŁ806.59, one bull ÂŁ2100.00 (McCartneys).
