New breed record of 5,500gns set at Blue Texel sale
Breeders Sara and Steve Gibbons set a new Blue Texel breed record of 5,500gns at Carlisle.
The new record holder was a ram lamb from their noted Whatmore flock, Brecon, Powys. Whatmore Woodpecker is a son of Jonsland and is bred out of last year’s Royal Welsh Show champion Whatmore Tonic. She headed back to Powys with the Jones family for their pedigree Jonsland flock.
The next best call of 1,500gns came for Cameron Cormack’s ram lamb Will-i-am This one is sired by Garn and sold to LA Richardson, Maguiresbridge, Co. Fermanagh.
The females topped at 1,750gns for a Millside sired ewe lamb out of a Greenwen dam from Andrew Froggatt,
She heads home with I Evans, Denbigh.
Next at 1,400gns was Yorkshire breeders AC and J Bailey’s aged ewe out of a homebred dam and sired by an import. She earned the female champion and overall rosettes in the pre-sale and was knocked down to Alford family, Devon.
At 1,00gns and sharing the trip home with the champion was the shearling gimmer Viewfort Venice, from J and E Lyle, Leven, Fife. This one is another Millside daughter, but out of a Shearstone dam.
At the same money was a homebred ewe lamb from the Gibbons. Whatmore Waffer is sired by Whatmore Salt and is out of Whatmore Tess. She heads home with DL Jones, Pencader. Dyfed.
At 720gns and 700gns were two shearling gimmers from the Millside flock of David Alexander,
Both were sired by Craigalbert and were out of homebred dams. The buyers were I Evans, Denbigh and HC Jewitt, Co.Durham, respectively.
Back in the game was the rams with a call of 650gns, which came for another consignment from the Gibbons family. Whatmore Vinegar is sired by this year’s Royal Welsh Show champion Whatmore Siren and is out of Whatmore ruby. He sold to E Hird, Brampton, Cumbria.
Following with a bid of 580gns was the shearling ram Corra Ugo, which is sired by an import and out of a Dulas dam. He sold to J and S Wareham, Heathfield, East Sussex.
Averages: six ewes, £595; one ages ram, £567; 12 shearling gimmers, £555.63; 13 Shearling rams, £459.58; 21 ewe lambs, £489.50; and 13 lamb rams, £935.96.
