New record set at Llandovery for Welsh Blacks
Last week’s Welsh Black sale at Llandovery saw a new record set when the home bred bull Dancoed Cymro 13 sold for 5000gns.

Having already taken the Welsh Black Cattle Society’s bull of the year title for 2007, the bull bred by Gwynfryn and Marian Phillips, Abergwaun, Pembrokeshire, smashed the sale record price previously held by an in-calf heifer at 1600gns. The two and half year old pre-sale champion was bought by new member Nigel Birt, Slebech, Haverfordwest. The reserve champion bull sold for the second highest call of the day. February 2006-born Cennen Arwel from Messrs J R and D H Francis, Llangadog, Carmarthenshire, sold for 2400gns to Tonwen Hughes, Llanidloes, Montgomeryshire.

At 1500gns, the highest priced female was Crwys Mali 3, a two and a half year old in-calf heifer from Messrs Evans, Llanwrda, Carmarthenshire and bought by the junior pre-sale show judge Aled Thomas, Holyhead, Anglesey.

Another in-calf heifer Neuadd Addawol 132 sold for 1300gns having already taken the reserve female championship. The home bred heifer from William Jenkins, Machynlleth was bought by new breeder Darren Woolfall, Pontypool. The same buyer also bought the champion female Cennen Peggy 64 again from Messrs Francis for 1150gns.
He also took home two yearling heifers Graig Goch Marian 40 and Graig Goch Ceri 19 from Emyr Jones, Denbighshire, for 940gns and 820gns, respectively.
Coming in at 1050gns was Martin Long, Glamorgan, who bought the champion maiden heifer Synfi Rosella 3 from the James family, Haverfordwest.
In-calf cows and heifers sold as part of the reduction of the Gellideg herd of J W Bowen, Pembrokeshire averaged 1181gns with a top price of 1450gns paid for Gellideg Meg, a rising four year old cow bought by D L Williams, Lampeter, to share a further six lots from this reduction.
Averages: 90 females 659gns; two bulls 3700gns (Clee, Tompkinson and Francis).
