17102011 Perth Lot 245 web.jpgYesterday’s sale of Shorthorn females saw an all centre female breed record average of £2,601 for 91 entries, a figure representing the highest number of Beef Shorthorn females sold in one day this century.

The leading female entry at 5,800gns (lot 245) was the female champion, Lowther Lily 266 from Charles Lowther’s 55 cow pedigree herd based near Penrith.

Sired by the Canadian bred Blelack Minstrel she was out of a Canadian sired homebred dam, Lowther Lily 1 and went to join Orkney breeder, Messrs Taylor’s four cow herd run alongside 150 commercial cows. The Taylors also went to 4,000gns for Lowther Strawberry Surprise 265 (Lot 243) of the same breeding.

Charles Lowther sold a total of nine females to average £3,605, the highest ever Beef Shorthorn female breed average from an individual breeder this century. The entire offering was by Blelack Minstrel, and was his first crop of heifer calves to come under the hammer sold. Earlier in the day the seven Minstrel daughters shown remained unbeaten in their respective classes.

Mr Lowther’s best price was a 4,000gns bid for Lowther Melody 267 (Lot 250), out of Newfield Radio Melody. This one headed to Bracken Hill Farm, Ayrshire.

Two then sold at 3,500gns. The first was Uppermill Rothes Jazz (Lot 204) from Mr J Porter, 1 Causeway Court, Ballinderry Road, Lisburn. This one is by Podehole Yeoman and out of Rothes Jenny and has a TSI and SRI of +14. This sold to 17 Ballycastle road, Co Down.
