PHOTOS: Farmers battle on as snow recedes

The coldest March for 50 years has caused untold damage to livestock farmers who are battling to get their businesses back on track.

As the snow recedes, farmers have been sending in more dramatic pictures that capture the aftermath of one of the coldest springs in living memory.

A Cumbrian farmer – known as @herdyshepherd1 – posted these spectacular images on his Twitter account this week (see gallery below).

He said: “Fields should be greening up with grass for our lambing ewes, but it’s hard for the sheep at a time when they need the weather to get better.

“Some fields are still under snow and ewes are lambing with less milk than they should be.

“Early spring is normally the time when there should be a bit of grass and we can put the lambs out to pasture as soon as they are born. But this lambing season is proving much harder work than it should be.”
