Poll and Dorset Horn rams top 1,400gns at Carlisle Multibreed sale

Poll and Dorset Horn rams hit a high of 1,400gns at Borderway mart’s multi-breed sale, Carlisle, last week (29 August).


Sale leader was the ram lamb Ballytaggart Unstoppable from Thomas G Wright, Ballymoney, Co Antrim. This December 2013 twin born lamb is sired by Ballytaggart Premium P145. He was knocked down to Hugh Cory, Peterston-Super-Ely, Vale of Glamorgan.

Second best and taking a bid of 1,200gns was the male and supreme champion Downkillybegs Ulrich C03 U84 from W and K Carson, Ballymena. Sired by Oliver Tree Nik Nak N10, who bred the top priced champion at Carlisle last year, he is out of a homebred dam by Wilsey Casper C137.  He also headed to the Vale of Glamorgan with Mr Cory.

Lot 355 Overall Champion Dorset sold for 12ooGns from W & K Carson, Downkillybegs Flock

M Clare, from Helston, Cornwall, paid 850gns for another consignment from the Ballytaggart flock. The December 2013 born single lamb Ballytaggart was his pick of the bunch, having been placed third in his class in the pre-sale show. Sired by Richhill Samson S45 he is out of a homebred ram and is half brother to the Carlisle 2013 champion Trojan.


Alex Birch, Bakewell, Derbyshire, made 600gns when selling his second prize shearling ram High Rakes Tommy T151 TO NA Thompson, Whitby, N Yorkshire. Sired by Richhill Saracen S029 he is out of a homebred dam by U17.


Female trade topped at 600gns twice.


First of these to sell for this money was DW Rossiter’s shearling gimmer Huish T408 from his Huish flock, Kingsbridge, Devon. Sired by Hilltop Lloys L20 she is out of a homebred dam by Olivertree High Society H45. She sold to KM and KM Mawson, Seascale, Cumbria, in lamb with twins to Granagh Nightrider N39.


Also making 600gns was her stablemate Huish T277, a September 2012 twin born gimmer, sired by Downjillybegs Humdinger H8. She sold in lamb with twins also by Nightrider. Buyer was G Kerr and Son, Wigton, Cumbria.
