Kate Humble joins hen welfare group
Springwatch‘s Kate Humble has become a patron of the British Hen Welfare Trust (BHWT), the latest in a list of celebrities to support the charity behind the rehousing of ex-colony cage hens.
Ms Humble, who with husband Ludo runs a farm in Monmouthshire, first approached the trust in last June to adopt some of their hens.
But she soon became more involved with its work, organising BHWT rehoming days from her farm admitting it had “become a passion”.
Trust founder Jane Howorth said: “Kate is a great ambassador for the charity. She is a hands-on hen lover who truly believes in the aims of our organisation, encouraging support for the free-range egg industry by asking consumers to buy products containing British free-range eggs. And her involvement in running hen rehoming days for the public for us is invaluable.”
The BHWT, which was set up in 2005, has so far rehomed more than 350,000 commercial laying hens. Ms Humble joins the charity’s other patrons including Jamie Oliver, Antony Worrall Thompson, Amanda Holden, Philippa Forrester and Jimmy Doherty.
