Orchard sprayers used to control disease and pests in Italy are now proving to be a valuable tool for disinfecting poultry sheds in the UK.
Earlier this year, Martyn Scott of AgriWash, North Yorkshire and Nigel of N Appleyard Pressure Washing Services based in Lincoln went to Italy to see the orchard sprayers in action. In the months since, they have been tweaking the design specifically for disinfecting poultry houses.
Mr Scott said: “The cab has a special chemical filtration system ensuring the operator’s safety and comfort. The disinfectant coverage is unsurpassed due to the application coverage and also the correct dilution and calculation of product.

“We currently use these machines within our client base of Hook2sisters, PD Hook Rearers and Breeders, Cranberry Foods and many other private customers.
He believes that these machines have taken disinfection to another level of biosecurity within the hygiene programme. “We searched the globe in terms of the correct machine for the job.”
Another innovation revealed earlier in the year by Mr Scott was a chemical-free disinfection system using a flame to kill bugs within poultry buildings.
