Stocking density changes loom
New EU regulations setting a maximum stocking density for broilers raised in a conventional environment have come into force in Scotland and Wales and are set to become law for English farmers soon.
The regulations are part the implementation of Council Directive 2007/43/EC or the Broiler Welfare Directive, which legislates the new maximum stocking density of 39kg/m² for conventionally reared birds.
Also farmers must notify Animal Health by filling out a Meat Chicken Notification Form if they wish to stock at levels higher than 33kg/m². Producers must also undertake formal training in poultry rearing unless they qualify for Grandfather Rights, which acknowledges experience as equivalent to training.
To qualify for Grandfather Rights a keeper needs to be at least 21 years old and have five years of experience, demonstrating competence in a variety of areas. Poultry keepers will be able to apply for the Grandfather Rights until June 2011. Details are available from DEFRA.
From December poultry keepers in Scotland and Wales will receive a form from Animal Health based on current details held by the British poultry register. English keepers will receive the forms in early 2011.
