Volunteers needed for new beak trimming study

Researchers at Bristol University are looking for egg producers to take part in a study aimed at assessing the implications of keeping birds without beak trimming.

Commissioned by DEFRA and led by Prof Christine Nicol, it is hoped the project will provide an insight into how the pending beak trimming legislation will affect animal welfare. A ban on beak trimming is planned for 2016.

The team of researchers is already working closely with pullet rearers to minimise the risk of feather pecking post-placement.

Volunteers will be supported through each stage of the process. They will receive an economic analysis of their current flock, be given advice on management techniques and will be provided with financial assistance towards any husbandry changes suggested.

Ideally producers would be thinking of placing an order for new pullets to arrive in early 2013.
