Quality lamb matched by firm prices at Knighton

A pleasing entry of quality lamb at Knighton market was matched by an equally pleasing trade being far improved on recent weeks, report auctioneers. Overall an average of 210.04 pence a kilo was realised, selling to 219 pence a kilo for both 40 kilo Texel lambs to £87.50 a head from A J Tortoriello, Cefncoed and 38.5 kilo Texel x lambs to £84.20 a head from J P Breeze and Son, Fronladies.

Also to 218 pence a kilo for 39.5 kilo Charollais x lambs to £86 a head from R G T and M GA Powell, Caebanal. 216 pence per kilo for 39 kilo Texel x lambs to £84.20 a head from S J C Morris and Sons, Whitcott Evan. 215 pence a kilo for both 40.5 kilo Texel x lambs to £87 a head from I J and D J Gough, 10 Bedstone and 40.5 kilo Texel x lambs to £87 a head from F Ruell and Son, Paytoe Hall. 213 pence a kilo for 37.50 kilo Texel x lambs to £80 a head from W A Lloyd and Co, Home Farm.

Top price per head was £92 a head for 45 kilo Texel x lambs from J P Breeze and Son, Fronladies. Also to £90.80 per head for 45 kilo Texel x lambs from A A and M G Wozencraft, Glanalders. £89 a head for 43.5 kilo Suffolk x lambs from S P Davies, Jay Barn Farm. £88.90 a head for 43 kilo Suffolk x lambs from R H Watkins and Son, Marlow.

A firm ewe trade remained similar to previous weeks averaging £62.89 and selling to £95 a head for Texel ewes from Mrs M Tortoriello, Cefncoed. Also to £90 a head for Border Leicester and Texel x ewes from J Thomas and Son, Tanhouse. £80 a head for Texel x and Suffolk x ewes from E G Jones and Son, Llanfair Hall and Texel x ewes from D J P Lewis, Treforgan.

Mule ewes sold to £79 a head from E R Harris, Pantycarragle. Mules also sold to £78 a head from D J P Lewis, Treforgan and £77 a head from both E G Jones and Son, Llanfiar Hall and T A Swancott and Son, The Lawn.

Speckled ewes sold to £76 a head from J Thomas and Son, Tanhouse and £62 a head from D J P Lewis, Treforgan. Welsh ewes reached £56 a head from A A and M G Wozencraft, Glanalders and £52.50 a head from H N Hodnett and Son, Brookhouse.
