Richard Bown takes champion title with Holstein at UK Dairy Expo
It was a great day for Richard Bown at UK Dairy Expo, when he beat off 400 cows to take the overall champion title at the show with Richaven Goldwyn Squaw 6, as well as both the Holstein champion and reserve and Ayrshire champion titles.
The leading lady was Richaven Goldwyn Squaw 6 by Braedale Goldwyn. In Mr Bown’s 25 years of showing, this is the first time he has ever won the double title. Squaw 6 was third at Dairy Expo last year and second at the Livestock Event and is yielding 54kg on twice a day milking having calved on New Year’s Eve.
Mr Bown said it felt “awesome to win.” “I knew she was in good form, but didn’t quite know whether we would do it,” he said.
Judge Hank Van Exel said of his champion: “she is a quality cow and it was very close between the Holstein and the Dairy Shorthorn. I loved her quality, dairyness and massiveness and she just got better and better in the show ring. It’s not often you get a young cow that comes back and gets better and better,” he said.
Mr Exel who milks 1,400 Holsteins and 300 Jerseys in Lodi, California, said the show has a great number of quality animals forward and the Holstein breed really stood out for him.
