Scores of cattle perish in barn blaze

The cause of a blaze which killed more than 100 cattle on a Yorkshire farm remains unexplained, according to police and firefighters.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue service said it was called to Low Park Farm near Snape at 4:17am on Tuesday (3 September). The first crew arrived 10 minutes later to find two barns engulfed in flames and immediately called for further assistance.

They were joined by four other crews from stations across North Yorkshire and together they managed to free dozens of cattle. Sadly, most of the animals had suffered such severe injuries that vets were called in to put them down. A total of 101 cattle died and more than 4,000 straw bales and 1,000 tonnes of silage were destroyed by the fire.

Firefighters saved many other animals in neighbouring livestock sheds and also prevented the fire from reaching the farmhouse.

The fire service is now involved in a joint investigation with North Yorskshire Police to establish the cause of the blaze.

Police inspector Geoff Crocker, said: “We must stress that the cause of the fire remains unexplained at this time.

“To assist the investigation, we are appealing for anyone who has any information which could help officers establish how it happened.”

Anyone who can help should contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option two and pass information to Northallerton CID quoting incident number 12130152823.

Information can also be passed anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800-555111.
